As always, I got too excited and forgot to take a before picture. The dresser was not really in great shape on the top, there were drill holes throughout and pieces of doweling inserted in them (it was weird!) So, unfortunately staining the top was out of the question (boo!!). Also the dresser was missing one of its gorgeous handles which meant I wasn't going to be able to reuse them :(.
I wanted to torture my self and see what the OG hardware would have looked like. Stunning right!
Enough torture... I began cleaning the dresser with TSP, used my carbide scraper to take off most of the finish on the top and all the drawers. Sanded the latter with 80, 120 then 220 and scuff sanded the body with 220.
I used Wise Owl Primer for the body and top to ensure no bleed through. Painted it with Wise Owl Enamel paint in Fauna.
I stained the drawers with one coat of General Finishes water based stain in Tobacco.
I then used a stencil from Dixie Belle called Morocco to dress up the sides of the drawers and used Big Mamma's Butter Slave to bring the inside of the drawers back to life.
After that it was time to do the transfer. I've never done one before I knew before I started I wanted to change how it looked and eliminate most of the birds. So I ended up cutting it into smaller pieces and over lapping. The transfer took me about 10 hours to do.
I ended up ordering my hardware from Amazon. I narrowed it down to 4 option and then picked the small Antique Bronze ones. I really liked the gold but I found that it was competing with the Floral transfer to much.
The 4 initial styles:
The Gold ones
I sealed the transfer and wood with 3 coats of Dixie Belle's Top Coat in Satin. Added the hardware and she was done!!
(Gah the glare in this spot was so terrible I might have to retake the finished photos :(. )
